Valera Mayberry

Valera (Prall) Mayberry, 100 years old, former resident of Atlantic, Iowa, residing in West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Janet Mayberry, on Monday, September 2, 2013.
She was born in Atlantic July 2, 1913, the daughter of Thaddeus Edmond and Elsie Luetta (Worth) Prall. She was married to Merlin Harris Mayberry at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic on June 1, 1930. They resided on a farm southeast of Wiota almost 50 years. They retired and moved to Atlantic in 1979.

Valera enjoyed several social and card clubs, but mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving are two sons; Merlin L. Mayberry and his wife, Marcia of Mobile, AL, and Terry D. Mayberry and his wife, Janet of West Des Moines, IA; and a daughter, Linda Legg of Ames, IA; seven grandchildren; Michael Mayberry and his wife, Michele of Mobile, AL, Brian Mayberry and his wife, Lucibeth of Franklin, TN, Sharon Mayberry of Birmingham, AL, Nancy Brecht and her husband, Joe of Ankeny, IA, Lisa Kuehl and her husband Bryan of Poulsbo, WA, Timothy Legg of Minneapolis, MN, and Abigail Thiel and her husband, Aaron of Ames, IA; and seven great-grandchildren; Amanda Boers, Christine Watson, Rachel Mayberry, William Mayberry, Suzanne Mayberry, Brian McKinley Mayberry and Lucas Mayberry; and one great-great-grandchild, Harper Boers; and one sister, Bernice Hupp of Lincoln, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merlin in 1989; five brothers: Earl, Leo, William, Arthur and Clyde Prall; six sisters: Luetta Mable Prall, Florence Kinnersley, Ada Hensley, Lorene Tracy Beebe, Elsie Lucille Grant and Betty Winterstein; and one son-in-law, Teddy Legg.

Visitation with family will be held Thursday, September 5, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA, with interment following in the Atlantic Cemetery.


Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation to Mercy Hospice.
