Virgil Charles Klever

September 28, 1926 — September 23, 2018

Virgil Charles Klever, the son of Charles and Lillie “Toots” (Newell) Klever was born September 28, 1926, on his parents’ farm east of Audubon, Iowa, and died September 23, 2018 at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 25 days.
Virgil was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and attended the Viola Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1943. Virgil then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa for a year, then returned to Viola and farmed with his father.
On April 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Delores Stansberry at the Presbyterian Manse in Audubon. They were blessed with three sons: Tom, Randy and Larry. Virgil continued operating the family farm east of Audubon, which they later purchased. Virgil and Delores grew row crops and raised Black Angus cattle. Later, in addition to farming, Virgil was the manager of the (ASCS) Agricultural Soil Conservation Service for more than 25 years before retiring from that office to continue farming.
During retirement, Virgil and Delores enjoyed traveling, making birdhouses and barn board benches and helping the boys on the farm. Virgil and Babe just recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in April. Virgil was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and was a member of the Mariners. He was a 4-H leader of the “Melville Money Makers” for many years. He enjoyed golfing and watching sports and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Virg enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and visiting with farmers. Virg always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in the many sports and activities they were involved in.
Virgil was preceded in death by his grandson Scott Klever; his parents; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Lucy and husband Harold Syas; James and wife Helen Stansberry; Raymond Stansberry; Rosie and husband Harold Martens; and Lenora and husband Bill Lundeen.
