Vyrle L. DeVoss, 92, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away on August 2, 2008, at the Allen House in Atlantic.
Vyrle was born the son of Ralph and Ruth (Westerlund) DeVoss on December 5, 1915, on their farm near Morton Mills, Iowa. He grew up with this two brothers George and Dean and a sister, Vernita, on the family farm. Vyrle graduated from the Villisca High School in 1934 and attended Diesel Engineering School in Des Moines. During the next few years, he worked on diesel engines on gas pipelines in Kansas and Texas before returning to farm in Iowa.
On March 16, 1941, Vyrle was united in marriage to Naomi F. Scheef in Walnut, Iowa. To this union were born four children: Dianne, Edward, Lindy and Gary. The couple began farming near Morton Mills, and then moved to Walnut and Elliott. In 1956, they settled on a farm three miles west of Atlantic. During this time, he served as a trustee and board member for the Atlantic First United Methodist Church. Vyrle served as a Cass County Supervisor and was also a member of the Elks Lodge and the Cass County Farm Bureau. Vyrle worked with Ted Becker Real Estate before establishing his own real estate business.
Vyrle was an avid fisherman and enjoyed arranging family fishing vacations at Park Rapids, Minnesota. He welcomed time with his children and grandchildren. Although the Lord has called Vyrle to his heavenly Home after a long full life, his love and example will remain in the hearts of those who loved and admired him. He contributed richly to the lives of everyone around him. He will be dearly missed.
Vyrle is survived by his wife of 67 years, Naomi; their four children, Dianne (George) Behrends, of Wiota, Iowa, Ed (Lana Guske) DeVoss of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Lindy Klinge of Ankeny, Iowa, and Dr. Gary (Nadine Bunge) DeVoss of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his sister, Vernita Adams of Red Oak, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Curt (Michelle) Behrends, Dale (Laurie) Behrends, Denise Behrends, Paula (Jon) Bequette, Jim (Liz) DeVoss, Susan (Clay) DeVoss McCullick, Elizabeth (Derek) Klinge Peterson, Christina Klinge, and Brian, Dan and Richard DeVoss; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Dean DeVoss.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa, with the Reverend Gary DeGeest officiating. Immediately following the funeral service the family invites you to join them for lunch in the church fellowship hall.
Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery in Grant, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 4, 2008, with the family present to greet friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
