Walter August Noelck, the son of William and Margaret (Herrmann) Noelck, was born July 1, 1923, at his parents’ home near Breda, Iowa and entered his heavenly home on August 31, 2018, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 1 month, and 30 days.
Walter was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He attended rural schools and graduated from Gray Consolidated High School with the Class of 1941. He was first in his family to graduate from high school. Walter worked on the family farm and assisted other farmers in the area until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1945. During his tour of duty he served with the first troops of the Occupation Army in Japan. In December of 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned to the area where he was employed at the Audubon Music Store.
On August 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Joan Duede at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Audubon County. They were blessed with nine children Mary, David, Paul, John, Wayne, Alan, Ruth, Carolyn, and James. They moved to Ross, Iowa and Walter was employed at Farm Service selling and delivering gas and oil to farmers. Later he became a lighting specialist selling all types of lighting to commercial businesses until he retired. His family was the center of his life. He taught them how to fish, play cards, change tires, play games, and enjoy the “little things in life.” With his family and in retirement with Joan, they traveled the United States, first in their little pop-up tent trailer and then in their “Scamp”. They provided their children with a wealth of knowledge of the beauty and history of the country as they camped in many national parks and climbed lots of mountains. Walter liked to garden and always had a large garden which kept Joan busy canning all of the produce. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Walter was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa and then joined Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa.
