Walter C. Wedemeyer, 95, of Adair, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006, at Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa.
Walter Carl Wedemeyer was born December 31, 1910, in rural Guthrie County, Iowa, the son of Heinrich F. and Kathrina (Ernst) Wedemeyer. Walter attended elementary school in Adair through the eighth grade, until he had to return to the farm, near Adair, to help his father.
Walter was united in marriage to Elaine Smith on June 18, 1938. To this union were born four children; Larry, Joyce, Marilyn and Lynn. After their marriage they farmed southeast of Adair until 1946, when they moved to a farm four miles west of Adair. Walter retired in 1992, and they moved to their present home in Adair.
He was a lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, Iowa, having been baptized and confirmed there. Walter helped haul bricks from the depot to the building site for the present church. He served as a trustee and also served on the cemetery board for many years.
Walter served on the board of directors for Farmers Lumberyard, the Adair School Board and Adair County Extension Council.
He enjoyed his family, traveling, playing cards and his love of wood working.
Walter is survived by his wife, Elaine of Adair; children, Larry Wedemeyer and his wife, Arlene of Anita, Iowa, Joyce Johnston of Stuart, Iowa, Marilyn White and her husband, Carl of Clive, Iowa, Lynn Wedemeyer and his wife, Marilynn of Owasso, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kim Kopp and her husband, Delmar of Anita, Iowa, Brian Wedemeyer and his wife, Susan of Minden, Iowa, Karla Martens and her husband, Cory of Kechi, Kansas, Tammie Harper and her husband, Mike of Bettendorf, Iowa, Jon Johnston of Marion, Iowa, Susan Mernone and her husband, Mark of Dallas Center, Iowa, David Johnston and his wife Renee, and Jesse Johnston all of Stuart, Iowa, Chris Barsness and her husband, Gary of Springerville, Arizona, Kevin Wedemeyer and his wife, Jennifer of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Connie Easterwood and her husband, Brian of Jenks, Oklahoma and Korey Wedemeyer of Owasso, Oklahoma; 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding Walter in death were his parents; brothers, Gustav, Otto, and John; sisters, Anna Uhlman, Emma Byrum and Norine Hocamp; son-in-law Larrie Johnston and 4 nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 10, 2006, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, Iowa.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair.
