Wanda Brown

Wanda M. Brown, 86, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 4, 2008, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic, after a short illness.

Wanda Mae Brown was born February 10, 1922, at home in Audubon County, the first born child of Roy G. and Alta (Hutchins) Aupperle.

She attended rural school in Adair County and graduated from the Adair High School in 1941. After graduation, Wanda moved to Modesto, California, and attended one year of college at the Modesto Junior College.

Wanda continued to work at various jobs in Modesto until 1947 when she returned to the Midwest to work at the Omaha World Herald in Omaha, Nebraska.

On December 5, 1948, Wanda married Harry H. Brown at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair, Iowa. After their marriage, Harry and Wanda lived and farmed 2 ½ miles south of Anita on Hwy 148 until 1964 when they moved to the town of Anita. From 1964 - 1966, she was the secretary for Solan Karns, and then was appointed by the council and sworn in by Mayor Arlo Christensen to serve as Town Clerk for the City of Anita. She served in this position for the next 20 years. Wanda lived in her own home until November 2005, when she moved and became a resident of Colonial Manor of Anita.

Wanda was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the Anita United Methodist Women (UMW), Maple Grove Neighbor's Club, Happy Helpers, Sunset Club and the Garden Club. Not only did Wanda enjoy organized group activities, she looked forward to playing cards, dancing and going on fishing trips with her husband, Harry. And, for many years she participated as a regular in a Saturday afternoon Ladies Card Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Trudy Ann Kading of Minneapolis, MN; grandson, Kyle David Kading of Minneapolis, MN; brothers, Lowell Aupperle and his wife, Inez of Greenfield, IA, and Neil Aupperle and his wife, Jannes of Anita, IA; sister, Audrey Wahlert of Anita, IA, Delores Templeman and her husband, Charles of Atlantic, IA, and Marlene Shannon and her husband, John of Madison, OH; brother-in-law, Bob Hagen of Anita, IA; sister-in-law, Ann Brown of West Des Moines, IA; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Harry in January 1991; her parents, Roy and Alta Aupperle; brother, Bill Aupperle; sister, Joyce Hagen; brothers-in-law, Bill Wahlert, Donald Brown and Chester Pieken; and sisters-in-law, Bernadine Aupperle and Luella Pieken.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the Anita United Methodist Church with Reverend Lynn Gardner officiating. Visitation is Monday, April 7, from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Anita. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita.

Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
