Bill Fagan, 83, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009, at Guthrie County Memorial Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
William Reed Fagan was born on June 25, 1925, in rural Adair County, Iowa, the son of William Henry and Ethyl Mae (Reed) Fagan.
He attended high school in Menlo, Iowa. Bill served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0265 in Greenfield, Iowa, for 57 years.
On April 8, 1947, he married Wilma Margaret Wagner at St. John's Catholic Church in Greenfield, Iowa.
Bill farmed for 13 years in the Greenfield area and then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation performing maintenance and as a rest area attendant.
He was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church. Bill was a member of the Adair Fire Department for many years, and also a boy scout leader. He took great pride in the time he spent volunteering in his community and that included helping with the local food pantry. Bill was generous with his time and could often be seen doing what he could to help others. He also enjoyed spending time with and taking day trips with his grandchildren. Bill's other hobbies included woodworking and leather tooling.
Bill is survived by his wife, Wilma of Adair, Iowa; and his children, Rose (John) Meredith of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Robert (Diana) Fagan of Manning, Iowa, Rita (James) Frie of La Crescent, Minnesota, and Shirley Fagan of Urbandale, Iowa; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Blanche Martin, Helen Porter and Jean Myers.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 12, 2009, at St. John's Catholic Church in Adair, Iowa.
Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Adair.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
