William Matthew 'Matt' Schrier

April 25, 1969 — January 5, 2012

William Matthew “Matt” Schrier, the son of William Thomas and Rose Ann Sweeney Porter, was born April 25, 1969, in Corning, Iowa, and died January 5, 2012, at his home in Exira, Iowa, at the age of 42 years, 8 months, and 10 days. When Matt was young, Rose married Stanley Schrier who adopted the children and raised them. Matt was baptized at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Massena, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa. He attended Massena Community Schools through the sixth grade and then attended Corning Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1987. He attended college for a short time before enlisting in the United States Army in February of 1989. During his tour of duty he was a communication specialist. He was stationed in Stutgart, Germany and in Korea and was involved in “Desert Storm” and “Iraqi Freedom”. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1996 and later discharged from the reserves in 2005. Matt was employed at several jobs then returned to college at Hamilton Business College in Omaha, Nebraska where he graduated with a degree in Information Technology. On May 26, 2007, he was united in marriage to Sharry Hocamp at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa. Matt was employed as an IT Tech at Variety Distributors and Farm Service in Harlan, Iowa and has been working as an IT Tech at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, for the past year. Matt was a member of the Brayton American Legion. Matt enjoyed his nieces and nephews, listening to music, spending time with his friends and always looked forward to family game night. Matt was an avid fisherman and a big Philadelphia Eagles fan and had a new found love for his Jeep. Preceding him in death were his father William Thomas Porter; his grandparents: Elnora and Harold Sweeney; Clara and Max Porter; and Robert Schrier. Survivors include his wife Sharry Schrier of Exira, Iowa; his children: Stormi Peterson of Exira; Noah Wardlow of Corning, Iowa; his parents Stanley and Rose Schrier of Corning; his grandmother Rosemary Schrier of Atlantic, Iowa; his sisters: Jodi Schrier and special friend Curt Pals of Orient, Iowa; Amy and husband Jeremy Johnson of Red Oak, Iowa; his nieces and nephews: Jodi’s children: Amber, Chelsy and Dannie Ward; Amy’s children: Steven, Derrick, Brandon, Nathaniel, Zane, Gabbie, Joey, Mitch, Lilli, Ilana; his mother-in-law: Marilyn Hocamp of Exira; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Sandi Hocamp of Exira; Paul and wife Christie Hocamp of Atlantic, Iowa; Steve Hocamp of Exira; great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Oakland Quincy Cemetery in north of Corning, Iowa.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Sunday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral Service will be conducted by Father Ken Gross on Monday, January 9, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa.
