William Petty

William "Bill" Walter Petty, 77, of Atlantic, died at his home Tuesday, May 3, 2011, of lung cancer.

The son of Ralph Paul and Anna Grace Petty, he was born Oct. 17, 1933.

Bill and Edith Mann of Griswold were married Aug. 24, 1952, at the Wiota Lutheran Church south of Wiota and had three daughters. He lived in Audubon for 25 years, then moved to Atlantic in 1989. Bill worked in the construction trade most of his adult life. He owned Petty Construction and
Maintenance, Inc. in Atlantic until he retired in Sept 1995.

Bill enjoyed camping, fishing, and travel as well as watching the birds and squirrels at the feeders outside the living room window. He loved having all the family together, especially the weekends at his house with any and all of the great-grandchildren.

He was a member of First Church of Christ in Atlantic. He volunteered to drive people to/from doctor appointments and delivered donations to Cookson Hills Children's Home in Oklahoma. He was also a member of the Atlantic Eagles Lodge.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents, Ralph and Grace Petty; five brothers,Paul,Donald, Leo, Cleo and Virgil; and one sister, Delores.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; three daughters, Debi and her husband Leonard McCurdy, Joyce and her husband Doug Bierbaum and Marsha Petty,
all of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Tracey Beerman of Cumberland, Troy McCurdy of Atlantic, Allen Bierbaum and his wife Lora of Ames, Keri Adams
of Belvedere, NE, Charles (C.W.) Adams and his wife Dezma of Atlantic,Adam Bierbaum and his wife Amy of Council Bluffs, and Aron Bierbaum and his wife Lindsay of Ankeny; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at the First Church of Christ, 1310 SW 7th Street in Atlantic, with Pastor Dale Kesterson officiating.

Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
